| After a marathon 2½ hour,
eight-innings duel between Hills
North and Cronulla South, the Hills
team prevailed in a magnificent
one-run game. They now progress,
as the NSW Summer representative
team, to the National Titles in
Queensland, on now. This event is
taking place at the Redlands
Baseball Club, roughly halfway
between Surfers Paradise and
Brisbane, on the Gold Coast. You can read more about
the tournament and download material at
the
ABF's Little League page.

Baseball

Saturday
June 7th |
Hills
defeats
Perth 3-1
Plan the
play, and
then play
the plan.
Today's win
over Perth
puts us into
the
Championship
game
tomorrow,
and it was
an
exhibition in
tournament
strategy.
The
execution
wasn't too
shabby
either, with
Morgan,
Hayden and
Scott
combining to
hold Perth
to just one
run. Just
like on
Thursday
against
Brisbane,
this game
also
went down to
the wire. With a
runner on
and two
dead, Hayden
reached over
the centrefield
fence to
haul in the
third out
and rob
Perth of a
game-tying
homer.
Congratulations
to the kids
and the
staff. Win,
lose or draw
tomorrow,
you've been
terrific
ambassadors
for Hills,
for NSW and
for the
sport.
Update:
And in what
has to be
the upset of
the
tournament,
Adelaide
defeated
Waverley
today, so we
face them
tomorrow in
the money
game.

A special
mention for
Newcastle,
our cousins
from
Country, and
the other
NSW team in
this
tournament.
They played
an
incredible
game this
afternoon,
going down
9-7 to Mt
Gambier in
eleven
innings!
Despite the
loss, the
kids and
coaches are
over the
moon:- they
put on a
real show
for everyone
and they
knew it.
Well done. |

Friday
June 6th |
Two
losses but
still no
damage!
Yes, that's
true,
unlikely as
it sounds.
We went down
13:6 to
Perth in a
tight game
that turned
on only one
run until
the last
dig. The
second game
of the day
went to
Waverley in a
13:2
blowout.
However,
under this
tournament
format, all
we had to do
was finish
in the top
four at the
end of
today, which
we did
(3rd).
Tomorrow
we get to go
against
Perth again,
in what is
setting up
to be one of
the games of
the
tournament.

Thursday
June 5th |
Game #1
v Brisbane
Metro was a
nail-biter,
with Hills
behind until
the bottom
of the last
dig, when
we drove
in two runs
to win 3:2.
Game #2 v Mt
Gambier was
also tough,
but Hills
prevailed
9:5.
That
leaves us in
Pool A
(undefeated)
together
with
Waverley and
Perth, who
launched
their
campaigns
with
impressive
wins of 29-0
& 14-0, and
10-0 & 34-0
respectively.
Tomorrow
we'll play
Perth at
8:30am, and
then
Waverley at
2:30pm. Both
look to be
solid
opponents.

Wednesday
June 4th |
After a
delayed
flight, the
team arrived
safe and
sound. The
afternoon
saw an
excited but
focused team
work through
their final
pre-tournament
practice
session. In
the evening,
a Managers'
Meeting was
hosted by
the ABF -
all went
well
apparently.
Everyone's
now looking
forward (?)
to a 5:30am
start
tomorrow
morning for
Game #1. |
